SPARTA TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) – A Sparta police officer rescued a man from a house fire that destroyed his home and killed his two dogs.

On Tuesday at 3:25 p.m., township police received multiple 911 calls reporting a structure fire on Maple Parkway, Sgt. Dennis Proctor said.

Cpl. Schomp arrived and observed the left side of 64 Maple Parkway partially engulfed in flames.  He observed the homeowner still in the residence and was unaware that his house was on fire.  Cpl. Schomp was able to get the homeowner to leave his residence, Proctor said.

The homeowner was taken to Newton Medical Center to be checked out and it appears two dogs may have died in the fire.  No other injuries have been reported at this time, Proctor said.

The Sparta Fire Department was assisted by Andover Fire Department, Byram Fire Department and the Ogdensburg Fire Department extinguishing the fire.
