WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) – The coyote that attacked a 66-year-old Belvidere man on the Columbia Trail Wednesday morning had rabies, the Morris County Park Police said Friday.
The Park Police received confirmation from the state that the coyote tested positive for rabies and the man has also been notified of those results, police said.
At 11:20 a.m. on Wednesday, the man was with two other adults, walking their dogs on the Columbia Trail near Fairview Avenue in Long Valley, police said.
A coyote appeared from the woods and attacked the man, biting him on the buttocks and right calf. The man was able to grab a nearby stick to defend himself and incapacitated the coyote, police said.
Officers from the Morris County Park Police Department arrived on-scene, euthanized the coyote and requested medical attention for the male. He refused transportation to a hospital and stated he would respond on his own for testing, treatment, and/or further observation, police said.
“As of now, we are considering this an isolated incident, so the area is still open to the public,” police said.
