HOPATCONG BOROUGH, NJ (Sussex County) – A police officer and a firefighter helped save a man who fell through the ice on Lake Hopatcong Sunday afternoon.
At 2:18 p.m., an ice fisherman on Crescent Cove, located off of Hudson Ave, fell through the ice, police said.
Hopatcong police officer Edward Janosko and Hopatcong fireman Wade Crowley put on the police departments ice rescue suits and jumped into the lake to help keep the victim stay afloat, police said.
The Hopatcong fire department and the Hopatcong Ambulance Squad responded and helped get the victim out of the water, police said.
He was taken to a local hospital as a precaution and his condition was unknown as of Sunday, police said.
“HFD, HPD, and HAS all responded and were able to rescue the male that fell through to bring a happy ending to the story,” Hopatcong Fire Department said.
According to the Hopatcong Ambulance Squad, the Hopatcong Fire Department just conducted their ice rescue training drill near the River Styx bridge and a few hours later they were back for a real rescue.
“Remember there is absolutely NO SAFE ice on our lake now,” the fire department said.
