SPARTA TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – A Netcong man who allegedly flicked cigarette ashes onto an officer and lied about his name was sent to jail on Friday morning.
At 1:16 a.m., a township officer stopped a 1997 Dodge on Route 15 northbound in the area of mile marker 10.5 for not having functioning license plate lights. As the officer approached the passenger side of the vehicle, the passenger flicked cigarette ashes out of the window onto the officer’s pants, police said.
The passenger stated he had no identification, but identified himself as Nicholas Mandeville of Netcong. After a check of this information, the officer discovered a warrant from Rockaway Township. He was placed under arrest for this warrant and transported to Headquarters for processing, police said.
While at Headquarters, Mandeville admitted to the officer that he was actually Michael R. Mandeville of Netcong and he had given the officer his brother’s information, police said.
Mandeville’s information revealed that he had an active $500.00 warrant from Roxbury Township and an active $448.00 warrant from Hackettstown. Mandeville was released on his own recognizance on these two warrants, but was charged criminally with third degree providing false information to a law enforcement officer. He was lodged in the Sussex County Jail on the criminal charge pending a court date.
The driver of the vehicle was issued a motor vehicle summons for maintenance of lamps and was released from the scene.
