DOVER, NJ (Morris County) – The New Jersey Department of Transportation has announced that two railroad crossing rehabilitation projects, which will require road closures and detours, are expected to start within the next two weeks in Dover. The projects will be done simultaneously, and both projects are expected to be completed within about a week.
Work had been scheduled to start on Monday, March 20, but has been postponed due to the recent winter storm. It is likely to start next Monday, March 27.
The work is being done by contractor Tracks Unlimited of Mountainside at crossings on Lower Richboynton Road and on North Salem Street. A separate upgrade project will be done by Morris County on the Sammis Avenue crossing, once the initial two crossings are improved. The rail line is used by the Morristown & Erie Railway.
In order to provide safer and smoother railroad crossing in Dover, the existing crossings will be replaced with new concrete crossings and new asphalt approaches. This federally-funded project is included within NJ DOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program which repairs, upgrades, or removes approximately 30 crossings each year, statewide.
