CHESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) – A trio from Chicago has been charged for allegedly burglarizing homes in Chester and Mendham.
Chester police responded April 6, to a residence on Route 24 near the Mendham Township border for suspicious males posing as power company employees and asking the resident if they had any power issues after the recent heavy rain, police said.
The resident stated that the males she spoke to was wearing a neon green safety vest and wore a baseball cap with a dark grey front panel, police said.
During the same time frame, Mendham Township police were investigating a burglary that occurred in their jurisdiction and involved a grey SUV, police said.
Shortly thereafter, a resident called in a disabled grey SUV on Fox Chase Road and prior to the officer’s arriving, the vehicle was towed to Mavis Tire Center on Route 206. The officers arrived at the tire center and found the vehicle in the service bay.
The officer observed a neon green vest and a partially covered jewelry box in the rear of the vehicle. One of the subjects was also wearing a baseball a cap fitting the description that was given to police.
During an investigation, the three individuals were identified as Tony Thomas, 28, Nicholas Costello, 28 and Sony Costello, 26, all from Chicago, Illinois. While police were conducting the investigation, the complainant contacted police and advised that a jewelry box and two wallets were missing from the residence, police said.
All three were charged with burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary, theft by unlawful taking and providing false information to a law enforcement officer. They were also charged with burglary and conspiracy to commit burglary in Mendham Township.
All three were lodged in the Morris County Correctional Facility.
