HACKETTSTOWN, NJ (Warren County) – First responders with the Hackettstown First Aid & Rescue Squad are now some of the best-equipped in the nation to save a pet’s life in a time of need.
The Pre-Professional Club at Centenary University donated Wednesday, three pet oxygen mask kits. The kits come with three different size masks and the tubing to connect them to the oxygen tanks, President and founder of The Pre-Professional Club Samantha Frosch said.
The kit comes with three different size masks. The small mask can typically be used on cats and possibly rabbits whereas the medium and large masks are typically for different size dogs. There are many more animal possibilities that could potentially use these as well, Frosch said.
“The oxygen mask kit idea was originally Dr. Bergey’s idea. We were talking about what community service project the presidential scholars could do and this came up. Eventually the Scholar program chose another project and I kind of adopted this one to the Pre-Professional club since I was in the process of starting it. My brother actually did this fundraiser for my hometown’s fire department on Long Island as well after he stole our idea! They got their masks a couple weeks ago and have already used them several times,” Frosch said.
The club held several fundraisers to raise money to buy the kits which cost $65.00 each. A “Throw Me a Bone” fundraiser was held at family weekend, where families of students bought and decorated a paper bone for $1.00. People wrote their pet’s names on the bone in memory of animals lost in fires and they were hung in the Student Activities Center.
“I also had a couple donations from different veterinary hospitals,” Frosch said.
We also used some of our club earnings from making and selling “Equine Emergency Kits.” We purchased stethoscopes, thermometers, gauze, vet wrap, Vaseline, antibiotic ointment, alcohol, Epsom salt, diapers, and much more to include in the kits so horse owners can be prepared for any medical emergency, Frosch said.
The Pre-Professional Club at Centenary University aims to give students who aspire to be post graduate professionals an opportunity to gain insight and advice on entering a healthcare profession. The club hopes to provide members with opportunities to gather and interface with other pre-professional students, as well as meet and shadow professionals in their field. The goal of all activities is to provide members with information on what is needed to become a well-rounded, highly qualified graduate school applicant with opportunities and diverse experiences to increase their chances of gaining admission into post graduate professional schools, Frosch said.
