Brother helps 15-year-old after being injured during dirt bike crash

HOPATCONG BOROUGH, NJ (Sussex County) – A 15-year-old male was airlifted to Morristown Medical Center after being thrown off his dirt bike Saturday evening.

At 5:33 p.m., the juvenile was riding a dirt bike in the woods off Brooklyn Mountain Road and as he traversed the berm in second gear he was thrown from the dirt bike, police said in a news release Thursday.

The juvenile landed on the handle bars and then the handle bar entered his abdomen piercing the lower left side. His brother was with him and held pressure on the wound until help could arrive, police said.

The officers had difficulty finding the victim but once he was found, the Hopatcong ambulance squad was able to drive to him, police said.

The victim was then flown to Morristown Memorial Hospital by a medivac helicopter. As of Sunday, the juvenile had no internal injuries but they were watching him for infection, police said.

No summonses were issued to the juvenile.

“If this young man was alone this incident may have had a very bad ending. If you can ride with someone, do so. If not, at least tell someone where you are going and what time you should be expected back. Of course carry a cell phone. This goes for all who enter the woods,”  Hopatcong Police Lt. Thomas Kmetz said.
