HOPATCONG BOROUGH, NJ (Sussex County) – A 64-year-old retired Hopatcong school teacher that has been missing since Friday night has been found deceased, Hopatcong Capt. Thomas Kmetz said Tuesday.
Arthur Clarke’s body was found Tuesday morning in Lake Hopatcong, Kmetz said.
On Saturday police responded to a home in the Knollwood section of Hopatcong for a missing person, Kmetz said.
It was reported that Friday night Clarke left to go for a swim around 8:30 p.m. This is not unusual for Clarke and he is an avid swimmer who swims both in cold months as well as near night fall, Kmetz said.
A family member went to bed and didn’t notice that Clarke did not return until she woke up early Saturday morning, Kmetz said.
A neighbor was contacted who found Clarkes flip flops and shirt on the dock of his lakefront home. His personal belongings were home as well as his bicycle and vehicle, Kmetz said.
“Clarke was a Hopatcong School teacher and is the owner of Hopatcong Eye Care. He is well known in our community. We are hoping for the best,” Kmetz sai.
The NJ State Police Marine Bureau is continuing the investigation into Clarke’s death.
