DESCRIPTION

Avoiding Dog Park Play Dangers
Dogs at play–fun times or time to intervene? Come learn the difference between healthy play and red-alert behavior, and discover when and how to step in to make sure your dogs are truly having fun.

Whether you have a group of dogs playing at a local dog park or a group of shelter dogs out for exercise, most of us loosely define healthy dog play as anything that doesn’t involve bloodshed, because “PLAY” is actually quite difficult to define. This lecture will take you on a video tour of the five most common behaviors seen when dogs gather together off-leash. By viewing videos in slow motion and frame by frame, we will be able to see which behaviors are healthiest and which are the most risky. Learn which dog-to-dog interactions are appropriate and know “when to say when” at the dog park. Interrupting those “red flag” behaviors is, by far, the most important component of keeping dogs safe.

With over 35 years of experience observing dog behaviors, “trainer to the trainers” Sue Sternberg has seen the best and the worst of dog interactions. You will be fascinated by what you learn as Sue shares her expert insight with humor and passion.

Join us for this special evening of revelations about your dog’s behavior while benefiting a local dog trainer in need. Event proceeds will be donated to help support Roseann Burrets-Baars, a dog trainer extraordinaire who is fighting a debilitating illness. An anonymous benefactor will make a matching donation to Antler Ridge for their support of this humanitarian effort.

Maxwell and Molly’s Closet Pet Boutique (with locations in Hamburg and Newton, NJ) is our co-sponsor for this event.

About Sue Sternberg: Sue has dedicated herself to ensuring the quality of life for animals in their communities, at animal shelters and in safe adoptions through national programs such as Training Wheels® for community shelter outreach. Sue has been an animal control officer, ASPCA behavior consultant, shelter founder, author, competitor in dog sports, and teacher of dog trainers world wide, and she continues to closely observe dog interactions wherever she goes. Sue has been developing and refining assessment techniques to help shelter workers and trainers determine the likelihood that a dog will engage in aggressive behaviors. She also created the Dog Park Assistant mobile app for iPhone, a video repository of behaviors to help owners stay involved and alert at the dog park and ensure safety and healthy behaviors for the dogs.
