HOPE TOWNSHIP, NJ (Warren County) – Two troopers with the New Jersey State Police were honored Wednesday for rescuing over a dozen farm animals from a burning barn in January 2016.
Troopers Jordan Siegel and Corey Smith, both stationed at the Hope Barracks, received the 200 Club of Warren County Valor Award for rescuing animals from a burning barn, state police said.
The troopers responded to a fully engulfed barn fire on Delaware Road shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 30 in Hope Township.
The blaze was only a few feet from another barn that was full of goats, sheep, llamas and chickens, state police said.
“Without regard for their own safety, the troopers entered the smoke filled barn in an attempt to remove the animals,” state police said.
After removing over a dozen animals from the barn, the frantic animals attempted to go back into the barn. The troopers quickly set up barricades using pallets and other materials from the farm to corral the animals and separate them from danger, state police said.
The troopers were able to get them all to safety before the barn was destroyed by the fire, state police said.
“Thanks to the quick actions of the troopers, all of the animals survived without injury or incident, state police said,” state police said.
