On Thursday, Morning Mike spent some time talking with Alana Mauger, from the American Red Cross. As summer begins, the American Red Cross enters a period when it is difficult to keep up with the demand for blood. Only 38 percent of the population is eligible to give blood – and out of that number, less than 10 percent of people actually do. Nationwide the number of new blood donors is down by almost a third – and in New Jersey, that number is more than 40 percent. A quick and easy visit to redcrossblood.org can line you up with information on how to give, where to give, how to prepare, what to expect, and more. Mauger said it usually takes only about an hour to donor blood. “In less time than it can take to go out to eat, you can make a lifesaving difference for cancer patients, accident victims, and others in need.”
