Man charged after traffic stop leads to finding 97 bags of heroin, brass knuckles

NEWTON, NJ (Sussex County) – A 28-year-old Essex County man is facing drug and weapon charges after he was pulled over by Newton police Wednesday afternoon.

At 3:08 PM, David Pezak of Belleville, NJ was pulled over by an officer on Halsted Street for allegedly operating his vehicle with a brake light out and an obstructed view of the windshield, police said.

Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer allegedly observed 4 bags of suspected heroin in the driver’s side door panel of the vehicle, police said.

Officers also allegedly recovered another 93 bags of heroin, about 1 gram of heroin packaged in small containers, Xanax and Adderall pills and a set of brass metal knuckles, police said.

Pezak was charged with possession of hypodermic needle, third-degree possession with intent to distribute, third-degree possession of controlled dangerous substance, fourth-degree possession of prohibited weapon, failure to maintain lamps and possession of controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle.

Pezak was lodged in the Sussex County Jail pending a hearing.

Assisting at the scene was the Sussex County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit.
