HACKETTSTOWN, NJ (Warren County) – A Warren County man was charged Thursday after he allegedly told police last month he was a deputy with the Essex County Sheriff’s Office.
David Murray, 18, of Columbia, NJ turned himself into Hackettstown police on Thursday and was charged with fourth-degree impersonating a police officer and obstructing the administration of law.
According to police, at 11:54 p.m. on June 30, town police responded to a residence on the 900 block of Grand Ave for a report of a large fight. When officers arrived in the area, they were advised that people were fleeing the area.
An officer then observed Murray standing by a vehicle on College View Dr. He advised the officer he was at the party and a fight occurred prior to him leaving the house. The officer requested Murray’s identification several times and refused the officers request, police said.
Murray allegedly advised the officer he was a deputy with the Essex County Sheriff’s Office. Through an investigation it was determined that he was not employed by the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, police said.
Murray was released pending a court appearance.
