MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) – Hackettstown man is charged with possession of stolen property after he allegedly stole a cash register from a Washington Twp, Morris County paint store.
At 11:30 a.m. on July 30, township police responded to the area of Route 46 near the TD Bank for the report of suspicious activity. The officers were advised that a male was behind the bank in a black sedan, and was seen tossing an item from the vehicle. He then exited the vehicle and attempted to cover the license plates, police said.
As an officer was traveling along Route 46, the officer observed a black sedan traveling east at a high rate of speed and made an abrupt turn onto Joy Drive. The vehicle missed the turn, and crashed into the woods at the bottom of a small ravine, police said.
Officers were able to remove the male from the vehicle, and after a brief struggle place him under arrest. He was identified as Dirk M. Cuesta of Hackettstown, NJ, police said.
Through the course of the investigation it was determined that Cuesta had committed the theft of a cash register from the Sherwin Williams Paint Store, located at 35 Route 46, in Washington Twp. He then fled to the area of TD Bank, where he tossed the cash register, then continued until he crashed at Joy Drive.
It was further determined that Cuesta had ingested an unknown number of pills, and needed medical attention as a result. He was transported to Morristown Medical Center for treatment, police said.
On August 3, 2017, Cuesta was being released from the hospital. He was transferred to the Morris County Correctional Facility, where he was charged with possession of stolen property, tampering with evidence, resisting arrest, under the influence of CDS, reckless driving, and failure to maintain lane, police said.
Cuesta will remain jailed pending a court hearing.
