Prison sentence for Sussex County man charged with stealing 12 handguns

NEWTON, NJ (Sussex County) – A Sussex County man was sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to burglary, the prosecutor’s office said in a news release Wednesday.

Michael Royce, 29, of Sussex was sentenced by Honorable William J. McGovern, III at the Sussex County Courthouse in Newton on August 4, prosecutor’s office said.

Royce allegedly admitted to entering a Hamburg residence which was not opened to the public at the time nor was licensed or privileged to enter and taking 12 handguns without the owner’s consent. The Hamburg Police Department with assistance from the Sussex County Guns, Gangs and Narcotics Task Force investigated the incident, prosecutor’s office said.

Royce was sentenced to six years state prison, 259 days jail credit for time served, $155.00 in court fines and $12,550.00 in restitution. He must serve eighty-five percent of that sentence before he is eligible for parole under the no early release act, prosecutor’s office said.

Royce pled guilty on May 23 to the second-degree crime of burglary.

Royce was represented by Thomas Militano, Esq. and the State was represented by Assistant Prosecutor Jerome P. Neidhardt.
