NEWTON, NJ (Sussex County) – Two Newton residents are facing drug charges following a traffic stop Thursday evening.
At 5:09 p.m., a town officer stopped a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica on Trinity Street for allegedly having a loud muffler, police said.
A theft investigation had previously been initiated in regards to a stolen purse from a Halsted Street residence containing an undetermined amount of cash and personal effects. The rear seat passenger in the vehicle, John Nystrand, 36, was allegedly suspect in the theft, police said.
When Nystrand was asked to exit from the vehicle an empty bag of heroin was found at his feet. He allegedly admitted to possessing same and was taken into custody. A search of his person also revealed a hypodermic needle, police said.
A subsequent investigation, revealed that the driver, Daniel Biermann, 29, had a suspended driver’s license. He consented to a search of the vehicle and the search revealed a fabric bag that contained several hypodermic needles, numerous empty bags and 3 full bags containing heroin. Biermann allegedly admitted to ownership of the items and was also taken into custody, police said.
Nystrand was charged with possession of a hypodermic syringe and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Biermann was charged with third-degree possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of hypodermic syringe, possession of drug paraphernalia (empty bags), operating a motor vehicle while his driver’s license was suspended, possession of a controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle and loud muffler.
Both were released pending a September 27 appearance in Superior Court.
