HACKETTSTOWN, NJ (Warren County) – Police say an 87-year-old town resident fell victim to a phone scam after receiving a call from someone claiming to be her son in need of $15,000 for bail.

According to police, the victim received a call Monday morning from a male who identified himself as her son. The victim said it didn’t sound like her son but he said that he had a cold.

The victim told police a male then took the phone and identified himself as “her sons” attorney, and that the victim needed to send $15,000 in order to pay for the bail, police said.

The victim withdrew $15,000 in cash and sent the money via FedEx to an address in Westland, Michigan, police said.

The suspect called the victim back asking for an additional $10,000 and if the victim had any stocks or bonds. That’s when the victim became suspicious and determined it was a scam, police said.

Westland Police Department checked on the residence and it was for sale and unoccupied, police said.

Additionally, an internet check of the number the scam was made from revealed it was a voice over internet phone number, police said.
