SPARTA TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – One man and his dog were rescued from a cliff in Sparta Township Friday evening.
At 8:11 p.m., township police were dispatched to the area of the Lake Mohawk Golf Club for a report of a male lost in the wooded area of the cliffs behind the golf club, police said.
Cpl. Joseph Antonello and Officer Steven Guido arrived on scene and were informed that Jason George of Sparta Township had gone looking for his dog and became stranded on the cliff, police said.
As darkness descended, both officers, with flashlights, followed the sound of George’s voice and were able to observe him approximately 200 ft. above them on the cliff face, police said.
The officers ascended the cliff and were able to reach George and guide him safely to the bottom. Once at the bottom, he requested their assistance to try and locate his dog before leaving the area, police said.
George called for his dog and the officers heard it crying. The dog was halfway up the cliff and Officer Guido escorted George back up the cliff to retrieve his dog while Officer Antonello kept the area illuminated, police said
Officer Guido, George and his dog made it back down safely from the cliff and they were reunited with the rest of his family, police said.
