NEWTON, NJ (Sussex County) – Two Sussex County residents are facing drug charges after they were allegedly found with heroin near a cemetery Sunday.
At 4:42 p.m,, Newton Police responded to the area of the St. Joseph’s Cemetery for a report of a male and female who appeared to be unconscious, Newton Police Lt. Robert Osborn said.
When police arrived, they located Shereen McManus, 27 and David Hearn Jr., 32, both of Hopatcong, NJ. In the immediate vicinity where the two were sleeping were numerous empty heroin bags and an uncapped hypodermic needle, Osborn said.
Both subjects were awakened by responding patrols and exhibited signs and symptoms of being under the influence of heroin, Osborn said.
McManus was found to be in in possession of numerous heroin bags with trace amounts of heroin, a hypodermic needle, a crack pipe and a tie-off that was around her arm, Osborn said.
Hearn was found in possession of five bags of heroin, numerous empty heroin bags and a hypodermic needle, Osborn said.
There were also numerous hypodermic needles on the cemetery grounds that were collected and disposed of by the officers, Osborn said.
Both were charged with third-degree possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of hypodermic needle. They were released pending a court appearance.
Then on Tuesday, at 7:55 p.m., Sgt. Michael Monaco was on duty when he observed McManus and Hearn to be present behind the mausoleum in the Newton Cemetery, Osborn said.
Subsequent investigation by Sgt. Monaco revealed that Hearn was allegedly in possession of a hypodermic syringe and twenty-nine bags of heroin, Osborn said.
Hearn was charged with third-degree possession of a controlled dangerous substance and possession of a hypodermic needle. He was lodged in the Sussex County Jail in default of bail, Osborn said.
McManus was not charged in this incident, Osborn said.
Both individuals were provided information relating to the Community Law Enforcement Addiction Recovery program, Osborn said.
