Officer taken to hospital after cruiser hit by suspected drunk driver in Sussex County

VERNON TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – A police officer in Vernon Township has been released from the hospital after the cruiser he was driving was hit by a suspected drunk driver Friday evening, according to Vernon Township Police.

At 7:30 p.m., Officer Emmanuel Rivera was on routine patrol driving on County Route 565 when his patrol vehicle was allegedly struck at the intersection of Drew Mountain Road by a vehicle attempting to enter the roadway, police said.

After the impact, Rivera was able to control his patrol vehicle and safely bring it to a stop, police said.

Sergeant Ken Kuzicki Jr arrived at the scene and conducted field sobriety tests on the driver who was identified as Rachel M. Pier. Her age and hometown were not released by police.

Pier was placed under arrest for driving while intoxicated at the scene. She was also charged with assault by auto, refusal to submit to breath tests and other motor vehicle summonses, police said.

Officer Rivera was transported to Newton Memorial Hospital and was later released, police said.
