Vandals burn Bibles, vandalize Liberty Twp. church

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, NJ (Warren County) –New Jersey State police are searching for the vandals who broke into a Liberty Township church, damaged property and set fires early Sunday morning.

A 5:36 a.m., troopers from the Washington station responded to the Free Union United Methodist Church, located on Marble Hill Rd, for a report of a burglary and criminal mischief to the church, spokesperson for the New Jersey State Police Lt. Theodore Schafer said.

The pastor found the church broken into and damaged, Schafer said.

Bibles and hymnals were set on fire, according to a witness.

The fires that were set to the “religious materials” were extinguished prior to the troopers arriving on scene, Schafer said.

Detectives are classifying this incident as a burglary, criminal mischief case and there were no injuries, Schafer said.

Church services were held at the church this morning despite the damage.
