Off-duty cop charged with vehicular homicide in crash that killed Stanhope woman

LONG BRANCH, NJ (Monmouth County) – An off-duty Long Branch police officer who was allegedly drunk when he struck and killed a Stanhope woman on September 22 has been charged with vehicular homicide.

Jake Pascucci, 28, of Long Branch was charged on October 31 with third-degree crime of strict liability vehicular homicide caused by driving while intoxicated or under the influence, according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey.

Karen Borkowski, 66, was struck and killed by a car driven by Pascucci. She was pronounced dead at the scene following the crash which occurred on Ocean Boulevard at 8:15 p.m., Carey said.

During the investigation is was determined that Pascucci was driving his personal car, a 2016 Jeep, on Ocean Boulevard and struck Karen Borowski as she attempted to cross Ocean Boulevard, which is a four lane highway, Carey said.

Three other motor vehicle summons were previously issued for Pascucci for driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, and careless driving, Carey said.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office is handling the investigation.
