BYRAM TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – A high-speed motorcycle chase last month resulted in two Sussex County men being charged.
On October, 22 at 4:59 p.m., a township officer observed two motorcycles traveling at high rates of speed and being operated recklessly on Route 206 North. The Officer caught up to one of the motorcycles and initiated a motor vehicle stop, police said Monday.
The motorcycle refused to stop and took off at a high rate of speed. The officer pursued the suspect into Andover Borough, Andover Township and Sparta Township. Officers from Andover Township, Sparta Township and the New Jersey State Police assisted in the pursuit. The pursuit was ultimately terminated in Sparta Township due to traffic and safety concerns, police said.
Approximately one hour later, New Jersey State Police found the motorcycle abandoned on County Route 611 in Green Township. Police then impounded the motorcycle, police said.
Approximately 30 minutes later, Andover Police advised that the owner of the motorcycle was reporting it stolen from a business on Route 206, police said.
During the course of the investigation, with the assistance of the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office, a communication data warrant was obtained and executed on a cellular phone belonging to one of the suspects, police said.
This provided an identity to the suspect on the motorcycle at the time of the pursuit. Subsequent interviews were conducted with the parties involved, during which confessions were obtained, police said.
The owner of the motorcycle, Bryan Peine, 29 of Andover, allegedly admitted that the vehicle was not stolen, that he falsely reported this and that he knew the identity of the person who fled from the police.
Mark Vogt, 40, of Andover, allegedly admitted that he was driving the motorcycle and fled from the police when directed to pull over, police said.
Peine was charged with third-degree hinder the apprehension of another and fourth-degree obstruction.
Vogt was charged with second-degree eluding, driving while suspended, unlicensed, speeding, reckless driving, improper passing, failure to maintain lane, failure to signal turn and failure to yield to emergency vehicle.
The Byram Police advised the assisting agencies of the identities of the suspects and they may face additional charges related to the pursuit in those jurisdictions.
