RANDOLPH TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) – A Dover man is facing multiple charges after he was allegedly caught driving a stolen car, eludes police and then headbutts a police officer.
Braunier Nunez, 20, was charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest, eluding, criminal mischief, receiving stolen property, and being under the influence of CDS. He was also charged with various motor vehicle offenses.
On December 27, 2017 at around 1:30 a.m., township officer Czerniak was on routine patrol when he located a black Toyota, which had previously been reported as stolen from Dover, in the drive-thru lane of McDonalds, located at 130 Route 10 west. Randolph Township Police Detective Lieutenant Christopher Giuliani said in a press release Monday.
After exiting the drive-thru, Nunez parked the vehicle in a marked spot. Officer Czerniak pulled behind the vehicle and began speaking with Nunez. The officer ordered Nunez to step out of the vehicle, which he didn’t comply. He then he put the vehicle in reverse and intentionally backed into the officer’s patrol car, Giuliani said.
Nunez then put the vehicle in drive, which was now facing the officer. Fearing that Nunez was going to strike the officer with the vehicle, the officer ran to the passenger’s side and broke out the window, again ordering Nunez to step out of the vehicle, Giuliani said.
Nunez fled from the vehicle on foot, leaving it in drive, causing it to strike another parked vehicle, Giuliani said.
Shortly thereafter, Randolph, Denville and Dover officers located Nunez behind 140 Route 10. He refused to obey police officers commands and resisted arrest,Giuliani said.
During the arrest, Nunez head-butted Officer Sean Verbist, causing injuries to the officer. Officer Verbist was treated and released from Morristown Medical Center, Giuliani said.
Nunez was lodged in the Morris County Correctional Facility.
