WHITE TOWNSHIP, NJ (Warren County) – An investigation is underway into a dead dog that was found inside a garbage bag on the side of the road in White Township.
According to animal control officer Robert Lagonera, a jogger spotted the deceased Redbone Coonhound mix, female, recently had given birth and was nursing in a black garbage bag on the guard rail side of Hope Crossings Road about a mile from the Route 46 entrance.
The dog was allegedly abused as it was severely emaciated before death, Lagonera said.
There isn’t much to go on, other than a chance someone witnessed the dumping or knows a neighbor with a dog fitting this description. There was no collar, no chip and no other identifying marks, Lagonera said.
“The bag was partially open and had no moisture on the inside so that leads me to believe it happened after snow fall,” Lagonera said.
Even if Lagonera can’t catch the person(s) involved, He wants it to be known that an investigation is ongoing through his office.
This act violates at least 2 different statutes of cruelty and multiple local ordinances, Lagonera said.
“With all this talk about the SPCA in New Jersey being disbanded I think it is prudent of me to remind citizens in my jurisdictions that I have been enforcing the cruelty laws in our towns this entire time. I probably have an ongoing cruelty case in the system at any given moment. There is no lapse in the enforcement of these laws in my towns from the Njspca being disbanded. And there never will be as long as I’m here,” Lagonera said.
