NEWTON, NJ (Sussex County) – A Newton man who allegedly struck a man in the head with a hatchet is also allegedly responsible for numerous vehicle burglaries.
Robert T. Oglesby, 32, was charged with third-degree aggravated assault, third-degree possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, fourteen counts of third and fourth-degree theft of moveable property, and fourteen counts of third-degree burglary.
During the overnight hours into Saturday, numerous burglaries to unlocked motor vehicles occurred in the area of Hillside Terrace and Landmark West Apartments, Newton Lieutenant Robert Osborn said.
At about 2:30 a.m., Monday, Officer Jared Zappa observed a male walking on Hillside Avenue and after a subsequent investigation, he was identified as Oglesby, and determined to be a possible suspect in the recent burglaries, Osborn said.
At about 6:18 a.m., Monday, police responded to Landmark West Apartments to investigate a report of a male being struck in the head with a hatchet and it was revealed that the suspect was Ogelsby, Osborn said.
The victim of the assault was transported to Morristown Memorial Hospital and received stitches to his left ear before being released, Osborn said.
During the processing of the scene of the assault, Detectives observed an identification card and a paystub with the names of two of the reported victims of the burglaries, Osborn said.
A subsequent search of the apartment yielded numerous items from the burglaries belonging to several other victims. All stolen articles were collected and several of the owners of the items were contacted, Osborn said.
The stolen items included, but were not limited to, GPS systems, cell phones, clothing, assorted paperwork, wallets, electronic charging cords, flashlights, watches, thumb drives, keys, compact discs, knives and loose change with an estimated total value of $3,200.00, Osborn said.
Oglesby was lodged in the Sussex County Jail.
There may have been other recent burglaries to motor vehicles within the town that went unreported. As a result, police are asking any of these victims to contact Detective Thomas Tosti at 973-383-2525 to possibly identify any of their missing items that may have been recovered and to make arrangements for their return, Osborn said.
Residents are reminded to lock their motor vehicles to prevent any thefts of a similar nature.
