Police find nearly a pound of marijuana during traffic stop

BYRAM TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – A traffic stop resulted in Byram Township police finding nearly a pound of marijuana Wednesday afternoon.

At 2:57 p.m., a township officer observed a vehicle failing to keep to the right and saw the exhaust was hanging low and scraping against the blacktop, police said.

The officer initiated a motor vehicle stop and the driver, Jahlil Ellis of Lakewood, WA, was found to have a suspended license, police said.

While speaking with the passengers, Stefan Simmons of Binghamton, NY and Jeremiah Daughtry of Vestal, NY, the officer detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle, police said.

The occupants allegedly stated that they had smoked marijuana in the vehicle earlier in the day, police said.

A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed approximately one pound of marijuana, as well as several containers of cannabis infused oil, police said.

Ellis, Simmons and Daughtry were all charged possession of over 50 grams of marijuana, possession of over 5 grams of hash oil, possession with intent to distribute marijuana and possession with intent to distribute hash oil. Ellis was also charged with failure to keep to the right, suspended license and possession of drugs in a motor vehicle,

All three were released with pending court dates.
