NEWTON, NJ (Sussex County) – A 70-year-old Newton man is in critical condition after being struck by a car Wednesday afternoon, according to Newton Police Chief Michael Richards.
At 2:26 p.m., police received multiple 911 calls reporting a pedestrian struck by a vehicle on High Street (Route 94) near the intersection of Church Street, Richards said.
Officers immediately responded and found Michael J. Bencivenga lying on the ground unresponsive, Richards said.
Bencivenga suffered injuries to his head and the sides of his body. He was airlifted by Atlantic Health Aeromedical to Morristown Medical Center, Richards said.
The vehicle that struck Bencivenga was at the scene and the driver was identified as Howard B. Kern, 83, of Fredon, NJ, Richards said.
Investigation was conducted at the scene and any charges are pending further investigation, Richards said.
A portion of High Street was closed briefly during the on-scene investigation, Richards said.
Newton police were assisted by the Newton Rescue Squad, Newton Water & Sewer Department, Newton Fire Department and detectives from the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office.
