ANDOVER TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – An alleged drunk driver hit a police car early Saturday morning in Andover Township.

Sean S. Patel, 26, of Sparta was charged with driving while intoxicated, failure to maintain lane, failure to move over for a stationary emergency vehicle, DWI in a school zone, failure to submit to breath samples, reckless driving, careless driving and obstruction.

At 4:29 a.m., Officer Northern had been investigating a reported hit-and-run motor vehicle accident on Newton-Sparta Road near Limecrest Road in front of Domino’s Pizza, police said.

During the investigation, a white Volkswagen Jetta drive by Patel had struck the rear of the officer’s patrol car and sideswiped the driver’s side. The vehicle had come to rest parallel to the Andover Township Police patrol car which had warning lights activated due to the crash investigation, police said.

Officers detected the odor of alcohol coming from inside the vehicle which also had a passenger in the car, police said.

Patel was removed from the vehicle and administered field sobriety tests. He was taken into custody and transported back to the station for further testing, police said.

Patel was released pending a court appearance in Andover Township Joint Municipal Court.
