DOVER, NJ (Morris County) – Town officials in Dover have announced that police are cracking down on illegal taxi and limousine operators.
This initiative is being undertaken to deter unregistered and unlicensed taxicab and limousine operators from conducting business in the Town of Dover, and to acknowledge the law-abiding taxi and limousine businesses operating in town. It is in response to numerous complaints about vehicles operating as taxis or limousines in Dover that aren’t properly licensed or permitted by the State of New Jersey or the Town of Dover. Such activity may endanger passengers and divert business from the legitimate companies that comply with the state laws and local ordinances, according to Mayor James P. Dodd and Public Safety Director Daniel R. DeGroot.
In order to legally operate a taxi or limousine in the Town of Dover, several New Jersey state statutes and local town ordinances must be adhered to. Violations of these laws subject offenders to significant monetary penalties.
Mayor Dodd stated, “Great efforts have been undertaken over the past two years to ensure that the taxi and limousine businesses in Dover are complying with the letter of the law. These businesses should be commended for their efforts to operate legitimately. The goal of our current initiative is two-fold: to prevent unsafe/unregulated vehicles and operators from transporting and possibly endangering passengers; and to support the legitimate companies in town that strive to operate according to the law.”
Public Safety Director DeGroot stated, “The Dover Police Department has been tasked with enforcing the state and local taxi and limousine laws to achieve the Mayor’s goal. Enforcement efforts are undertaken regularly on varying days and times to identify violators and issue summonses that carry significant penalties for both the vehicle operators and the companies they work for.”
