SPARTA TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – Police say an alleged drunk driver hit a tree in his front yard while backing into his driveway Sunday afternoon.
Mitchell Panten, 61, of Sparta was charged with driving while intoxicated and driving while intoxicated in a school zone.
At around 4:00 p.m., township police responded to 27 Sagamore Trail for a report of a motor vehicle accident, Sparta Township Police Lieutenant John Lamon said.
After police spoke to a witness, police were able to determine that Panten had operated his vehicle while intoxicated. He allegedly struck a tree in his front yard while backing into his driveway, Lamon said.
Panten was transported to Newton Hospital for a complaint of back pain, Lamon said.
Panten was released pending a mandatory first appearance court date.
