NEWTON, NJ (Sussex County) – A North Carolina man is facing weapon and drug charges following a traffic stop Thursday morning.
Gary Lee Louk, 48, of Sanford was charged with third-degree unlawful possession of a weapon without a permit, fourth-degree possession of more than 5 grams of hashish without a prescription, possession of drug paraphernalia, third-degree possession of Clonzaepam without a valid prescription, third-degree possession of Alprazolam without a valid prescription, possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana, operating a motor vehicle while driver’s license is suspended or revoked, possession of controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle and speeding.
At around 8:12a.m., Sgt. Michael Monaco stopped a 2003 Ford Explorer, which was being driven by Louk, on Route 206 for allegedly speeding, Newton police Lieutenant Robert Osborn said.
Subsequently, Sgt. Monaco detected the odor of burnt marijuana and raw marijuana coming from the interior of the vehicle. He also observed in plain view on the passenger’s side floor board a marijuana smoking pipe, Osborn said.
Louk was taken into custody and a search incident to arrest revealed an unloaded 12 gauge Winchester pump action shotgun laying on the rear floor. Additionally, a quantity of raw marijuana, hashish oil, paste, and two prescription medications along with pipes and rolling papers were also found within the interior of the vehicle.
Louk was released pending an appearance in Sussex County Superior Court.
