NEWTON, NJ (Sussex County) – A Newton man is facing multiple charges after police find him with a BB gun.
Russell Shine, 56, was charged with second-degree possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, fourth-degree aggravated assault and second degree certain persons not to possess weapons.
On May 13 at 10:14 a.m., police responded to the area of Spring Street near the intersection of Moran Street for a report a male brandishing a handgun, Newton Police Lieutenant Robert Osborn said.
Upon patrols arrival, they observed a person matching the provided description to be walking into a Spring Street apartment building. Subsequently, this male was identified as Shine, Osborn said.
Further investigation revealed that Shine was allegedly in possession of a black, spring loaded BB gun that closely resembled a .45 cal M1911 style handgun but had put the weapon back in his apartment, Osborn said.
Witnesses indicated that Shine had reportedly pointed the gun at 2 people who were present on the 2nd floor porch area of the Spring House, Osborn said.
Shine was lodged in the Sussex County Jail pending court.
