HAMPTON TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – The New Jersey State Police have made an arrest in a shoplifting case thanks to tips received from residents who saw the case on social media.

Detectives from the Sussex Station identified and charged Michael Betts, 34, of Bushkill, P.A. for allegedly attempting to steal shopping carts full of Red Bull energy drinks from the Walmart in Hampton Township and the Weiss Market in Newton on May 2, state police said.

“Just one day after we posted to our social media sites asking for your assistance, your tips assisted our detectives with identifying Betts as the suspect,” state police said.

Investigators then discovered that Betts was lodged on May 19 at the Passaic County Jail by Totowa Station Troopers for unrelated charges, state police said.

Michael Betts was charged with shoplifting and is currently awaiting a bail hearing, state police said.
