ROCKAWAY BOROUGH, N.J. (Morris County) – A railroad crossing upgrade project has been re-scheduled at a busy intersection in Rockaway Borough to start next Monday morning, July 11, and to reopen by Friday evening, July 15, and is expected to cause road closures and traffic diversions for most of the week.
Morris County awarded a contract to Tracks Unlimited of Mountainside to reconstruct the railroad crossing at East Main Street (County Route 644) at Franklin Avenue in Rockaway Borough.
The project includes raising the railroad crossing to eliminate a current dip in the road at the rail junction. The work will require the contractor to close the road for a short period of time.
Access to nearby driveways and sidewalks also may be disrupted briefly
The county originally scheduled the closure to begin Monday, June 27 and last for just two days. But the work is more complicated than expected, which resulted in the change of dates and extent of the closure.
“We apologize for any delays and disruptions this may cause to our residents in Rockaway Borough, and I assure you that we will work closely with the contractor to limit the disruption as much as possible, and to get the project finished as quickly as possible,’’ said Freeholder John Cesaro, the county governing board’s liaison on road and bridge projects.
“We ask for your cooperation during this time to ensure the safety of workers, drivers, and residents,’’ Freeholder Cesaro added.
Police will be on site to aid the motoring public and pedestrians during the project.
The rail crossing that is being improved is part of the Morris County owned Dover and Rockaway Branch, which is used by the Morristown & Erie Railway.
