SPARTA TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – A Sparta man is facing a theft charge after he allegedly stole a pair of driving while intoxicated simulator goggles, Sparta Township Police Lieutenant John T. Lamon said.
On May 25, New Jersey State Police and the Sparta Police Department participated in a Safe Stock program held at Sparta High School, Lamon said.
During the demonstration, state police used DWI goggles that simulate the effects of alcohol when trying to operate a motor vehicle after consuming various amounts of alcohol, Lamon said.
At around 9:45 a.m., Cpl. David Pridham realized that a pair of the goggles was missing. After unsuccessfully checking the area, school security was asked to review video footage of the area, Lamon said.
It was determined that Matthew Allen, 18, had put the goggles under his shirt and left the area, Lamon said.
A visual check of Allen’s vehicle showed that the goggles were in the seat pouch behind the front passenger seat, Lamon said.
The school administration was advised and Allen was called to the school office. He was advised that he was caught on surveillance video taking the goggles and the goggles were located in his vehicle. He was additionally advised that he was being charged with the theft of the state police goggles, Lamon said.
Allen was charged on June 1 with theft of property and released pending a mandatory court appearance.
