BLAIRSTOWN TOWNSHIP, NJ (Warren County) – A school bus driver who evacuated children from her bus before it caught fire received a big honor Thursday.

The Blairstown Elementary School board held their monthly meeting Thursday and there was a special guest in attendance, Kathleen Dolan, who was there to receive a proclamation for school bus heroism.

School Superintendent Mark Saalfeld presented the award to Dolan as her family looked on.

Although Dolan won’t call herself a hero, you would be hard pressed to convince the parents whose children safely returned home that day.

On Monday, May 21, Blairstown Elementary School bus driver, Kathleen Dolan, had just turned onto Hoagland road while on her morning route, picking up children, when she noticed the front of her bus started to smoke.

Dolan quickly found a safe place to pull over, and just before the smoke started to fill the bus, she evacuated the 10 children on board. She then ushered them away as the bus burst into flames.

The children waited in a private house and watched as the firefighters from Hope and Blairstown put out the fire.
