On Thursday, Wendy’s identified some of its franchises where customers’ payment card information may have been compromised in two cyberattacks.
Credit and debit card purchases made between December 2, 2015, and June 8, 2016 were compromised. Several restaurants in Warren, Morris and Sussex counties were affected.
WARREN COUNTY:

MORRIS COUNTY:
-Rockaway – 301 Mount Hope Ave Ste#2103
-Butler – 1204 Route 23 north
-Chester – 35 U.S. Highway 206 south
-East Hanover – 413 Route 10
-Parsippany – 736 Route 46 and 2099 Route 46
SUSSEX COUNTY:
-Lake Hopatcong – 728 Route 15 south

Wendy’s first reported unusual payment card activity affecting some franchise-owned restaurants in February 2016. Subsequently, on June 9, 2016, the Company reported that an additional malware variant had been identified and disabled.
Wendy’s believes the criminal cyberattacks resulted from service providers’ remote access credentials being compromised, allowing access – and the ability to deploy malware – to some franchisees’ point-of-sale systems. To date, there has been no indication in the ongoing investigation that any Company-operated restaurants were impacted by this activity, according to a news release.
The hackers were able to obtain cardholder name, credit or debit card number, expiration date, cardholder verification value (which doesn’t include the three or four digit number that is printed on the front or back of cards) and service code, according to Wendy’s.
Wendy’s is offering one year of complimentary fraud consultation and identity restoration services to all customers who used a payment card at any potentially impacted franchisee locations during the affected dates for both malware variants.
“We sincerely apologize to anyone who has been inconvenienced as a result of these highly sophisticated, criminal cyberattacks and we will continue to work diligently with our investigative team to apply what we have learned from these incidents and further strengthen our data security measures,” President and CEO of Wendy’s Todd Penegor said.
