Pregnant woman extricated from vehicle after head-on crash on Route 15 (PHOTOS)

SPARTA, N.J.(Sussex County) – A Hamburg, NJ, woman, who is six months pregnant, suffered broken bones and lacerations in a head-on crash on Route 15 Tuesday, Sparta Township Police Sgt. Dennis Proctor said.

Melissa D. Scevola, 36, was entrapped in her 2012 Jeep Liberty after the crash but there were no reported issues with her pregnancy, Proctor said.

The investigation revealed that a 2005 Chevy Trailblazer operated by Joshua M. Buttacavole, 20, of Lodi, NJ and a passenger Nicholas M. Baya, 20, of Lodi, NJ were traveling north on Route 15 near mile-marker 12 at about 9:54 a.m. when Buttacavole lost control of the vehicle and rolled onto the grass median before striking Scevola’s Jeep head-on in the southbound lane, Proctor said.

Scevola was extricated from her vehicle and was taken to Morristown Medical Center for treatment.

Baya suffered minor injuries and was taken to St. Clare’s Hospital in Denville Township.

Buttacavole was not injured in the crash and was released after questioning, Proctor said.

“The crash is still under investigation and charges are potentially pending for Buttacavole,” Proctor said.

Route 15 southbound was closed for 5 1/2 hours after the crash and was reopened after 2:00 p.m.

Assisting at the scene was the Sparta Fire Department, Sparta EMS, St. Clare’s Medics, Ogdensburg Fire Department and the NJ State DOT.
