ROXBURY TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) – Firefighters were called around 1:15 p.m. Wednesday to a reported house fire at 519 Route 46 Apt. A in the Kenvil section of Roxbury Township.
“We’re still investigating the cause of the fire,” Roxbury Township Fire Official Michael Pellek said Wednesday evening.
Jorge Rojas works across the street from the cluster of apartments and told RNJ “an old man was screaming somebody inside, somebody inside.”
One man was home during the blaze and made it out of the home. The man was taken to the hospital, Pellek said.
“I got a fire extinguisher, broke the door to try to do something, I see explosion and I don’t know what happened, I could do nothing,” Rojas said.
The call came over as an oxygen tank on fire but I need to interview the homeowner and hopefully he can shed some light on this, Pellek said.
“I hear something inside, I was scared, I think maybe people inside but the guy said no it’s a dog inside,” Rojas said.
One dog was home at the time of the fire but died from injuries sustained in the fire, Pellek said.
The fire was knocked down by 3 p.m.
Route 46 was closed for about two hours between Dell Avenue and Railroad Avenue. The roadway reopened at about 3:30 p.m.
Two Apartments were deemed uninhabitable, Pellek said.
“Responded to a fire in Roxbury, helping 2 families (4 people) with emergency assistance, including temporary lodging,” New Jersey Red Cross, said.
No firefighters were injured in the blaze, Pellek said.
Assisting the Roxbury Township fire departments, police, and rescue squads, were Dover, Mine Hill, Randolph, Wharton, St. Clare’s, Morris County Office of Emergency Management, and the American Red Cross.
