POHATCONG TOWNSHIP N.J. (Warren County) – Township police are still investing an alleged bear attack that occurred Wednesday morning in the 300 block of County Route 627.
According to police,the victim said he walked out his back door at 9:00 a.m. and onto the porch to feed his cat. He said when he walked onto the porch he encountered a 450-500 pound black bear eating left over cat food.
The bear appeared to have been startled and then swiped at the victim causing injury to his arm. The bear immediately ran from the porch and into a nearby cornfield, police said.
“This department HAS NOT confirmed that there was a bear encounter this morning. The incident is still be investigated and more information will be released as it becomes available,” Pohatcong Township police wrote on a Facebook post Wednesday afternoon.
“Our department will continue their investigation of the reported bear attack. I commend the police, medical and wildlife professionals for their work on this incident today. We hope to have this matter finalized in the next day,” Pohatcong Township Maor James Kern said.
The man suffered lacerations to his arm and was transported to St.Luke’s Warren Hospital for treatment, police said.
New Jersey State Fish and Game was contacted and they immediately responded. There are currently efforts to trap the bear, police said.
