1 jailed, 1 on the run in armed robbery of Chatham jewelry store

CHATHAM BOROUGH, N.J. (Morris County) – Two Essex County men have been charged in connection with an armed robbery that occurred at Crescent Jewelers, Morris County Prosecutor Fredric M. Knapp and Chatham Borough Police Chief Philip J. Crosson, Jr. said.
 
Michael Reed, 46, of Newark, and Raiys Grimes, 35, of West Orange, have both been charged with robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose; unlawful possession of a weapon, theft, conspiracy to commit theft, burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary, criminal restraint, conspiracy to commit criminal restraint, and aggravated assault for pointing a firearm. Reed was also charged with a separate weapons charge, Knapp and Crosson said.
 
On Thursday, July 28, at 10:54 a.m. Reed and Grimes allegedly entered Crescent Jewelers at 251 Main Street in Chatham Borough and stole jewelry and cash valued in excess of $75,000. During the robbery, a handgun was produced and a store employee was physically restrained, Knapp and Crosson said.
 
During the investigation, law enforcement recovered various proceeds from the robbery, as well as the handgun that is alleged to have been used during this crime.
 
Reed is currently being held at the Morris County Correctional Facility in lieu of a $250,000 bail with no 10 percent bail option.
 
Raiys Grimes remains a fugitive and is currently being sought by law enforcement.
