BYRAM TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) – A Pennsylvania man remains at large Tuesday after he escaped from officers on Interstate 80, police said.
On Monday, August 22 at 2:01 p.m.a Byram Police Officer observed a motor vehicle traveling below the posted speed limit in the center lane of the highway as well as a passenger seat belt violation, police said.
The vehicle was stopped on Interstate 80 westbound and after a brief investigation, the officer suspected that several of the vehicle occupants were under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance, police said.
Ryan Smithers of Stroudsburg, PA was observed attempting to discard several bags of Heroin over the guardrail. The officer confronted Smithers and at this time he surrendered 20 bags of heroin, police said.
Smithers then ran across the four lanes of westbound Route 80, while almost being struck by several vehicles, police said.
A K-9 track was unable to locate Smithers at this time, police said.
The three remaining suspects identified as Kenneth Petersen Jr. of Stroudsburg, PA, was found to possess three bags of heroin and drug paraphernalia, Ivy K. Masar of Bangor, PA, was found to possess two hypodermic syringes and drug paraphernalia and Anyssa Kravchenko of Bangor, PA, was found in possession a hypodermic syringe, police said.
Kenneth J. Petersen Jr. was charged with third degree possession of heroin, disorderly persons possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of CDS in a motor vehicle, failure to keep right and failure of passenger to wear seat belt.
Ivy K. Masar was charged with disorderly persons possession of drug paraphernalia, disorderly persons possession of a hypodermic syringe.
Anyssa N. Kravchenko was charged with disorderly persons possession of a hypodermic syringe.
The three suspects were processed and released pending a court appearance.
Ryan A. Smithers has charges pending for third degree possession of heroin and fourth degree obstruction with bail set at $10,000 no ten percent option.
