HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Warren county) – A Hackettstown school official investigating suspicious people in a vehicle on high school property, had to jump on the hood of the car after the alleged drunk driver drove the car towards the official, Hackettstown Police said.
Town police responded to Hackettstown High School, located at 701 Warren St, on Monday, September 12 at 3:29 p.m. in reference to a suspicious person’s complaint.
As the officer arrived at the school, the officer observed a school official in front of the vehicle and the vehicle then drove forward causing the school official to get on the hood of the vehicle, police said.
The officer approached the vehicle and detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage and marijuana coming from inside the vehicle, police said.
A police investigation determined that the individuals in the vehicle were going to the town pool. Once they realized the pool was closed, they parked in the school parking lot, police said.
While the officer was speaking to the driver, who was identified as Daysy Castro-Alzate, 18, of Paterson, NJ, the officer detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage, police said.
A passenger in the vehicle, who was identified as Joel Cruz, 22, of Paterson, NJ, had in his possession a clear plastic bag containing suspected marijuana, hashish and multiple small clear plastic baggies, police said.
Police also located inside the vehicle, was a bottle of Vodka and styrofoam cups with the odor of an alcoholic beverage.
Castro-Alzate was charged with DWI in a school zone, operating a motor vehicle who has consumed alcohol under the age of 21, possession of alcohol on school property, disorderly conduct and simple assault.
Cruz was charged with fourth degree possession of more than 5 grams of hashish and possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana.
Two other passengers in the vehicle, Yusuf Ibrahim, 19, of Paterson NJ and Maria Santamaria, 19, of Clifton, NJ were both charged with possession of alcohol on school property and disorderly conduct.
All four were released pending a court appearance.
