STILLWATER TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) – New Jersey State Police detectives charged a Newton man on Monday, who was wanted for his involvement in a hit and run crash in Stillwater Twp.

Derik Amalfitano, 20, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury, endangering an injured victim, assault by auto, hindering apprehension, and tampering with evidence.

State police responded on Monday, August 29 to a hit and run accident that occurred at the intersection of Stillwater Rd and Possum Hill Rd in Stillwater Twp.

The initial investigation revealed that a Jeep failed to stop at the intersection and struck a red Ford Explorer. The Jeep immediately fled the scene, but further investigation later revealed that the vehicle was a blue Jeep Cherokee, state police said.

Detectives received information from multiple sources which identified Amalfitano as the driver of the vehicle that fled the scene. Through multiple interviews of victims and witnesses, detectives were able to locate Amalfitano’s blue Jeep Cherokee hidden in a wooded area near his residence. The Jeep had heavy front end damage consistent with evidence left at the scene of the crash.

On Monday, detectives located Amalfitano in Frankford Twp and was arrested without incident. He was later released on his own recognizance pending a Superior Court appearance.
