WARREN COUNTY. N.J. – Jim McDonald, Republican nominee for Warren County sheriff, has responded to a recent article about ‘double-dippers’ as being biased towards him and other law enforcement officers.
The recent article on NJ Spotlight, ‘Double-Dippers’ Dominate Sheriff Elections Across New Jersey, says “Jim McDonald is on the verge of hitting a jackpot in New Jersey’s election sweepstakes as a new double-dipping county sheriff.”
In a statement released to RNJ, Jim McDonald said, “The author had a clear intention on writing a biased article against me and other law enforcement officers.”
“The article fails to mention that I will be the first Sheriff in more than 30 years that will not collect a new public employee pension like every Sheriff before me has. Warren County will actually save a significant amount by not having to pay for a new pension for me, or any of my Under-sheriffs,” McDonald said.
Senator Jennifer Beck (Monmouth) and Senator Steven V. Oroho (Morris, Sussex and Warren) first proposed legislation in 2011 that would suspend a person’s pension until the person no longer is employed by a public employer in a position with compensation more than $15,000.
The bill, S-515, which is also co-sponsored by Senators Anthony R Bucco and Bateman, has been trapped in committee since it was pre-filed for introduction in the 2016 legislative session.
“Police officers contribute to their pension every day of their career and when they retire, the contributions that are made by their employer end, and there is no further contribution from the state or municipality to that officer’s retirement account. So whether a retiree collects their pension or not, it has no effect on the taxpayers. Regardless of who is elected as the next Sheriff, they will be paid a salary to do the job,” McDonald said.
McDonald’s only opponent in the upcoming election is Independent candidate Joseph DeWitt.
