BUTLER, N.J. (Morris County) – The recent creepy clown sightings has prompted at least one Morris County school district to ban clown masks and costumes this Halloween.
Mario D. Cardinale, the interim superintendent of the Butler School District said Wednesday, “Given all of the negative attention which has become associated with “clowning”, clown masks and clown costumes in recent weeks, and working in consultation with the Butler Police Department, we believe this ban on clown masks and clown costumes is very much appropriate and in order.”.
“There have been several incidences of “clowning” in other Morris County towns recently. It is our hope and expectation that our ban on the use of clown costumes within the schools or on school property or at school events will assist minimizing any needless use of police and law enforcement resources. This ban will also be another proactive step in keeping our school environment correctly focused, orderly, and safe,” Cardinale said.
Some school districts in Union County, Essex County and Passaic County have banned clown costumes this Halloween.
No other schools in Morris County have so far imposed a ban but Morris Plains School District is trying to discourage students from dressing as clowns.
“In light of the current events involving people dressing as clowns with the sole purpose of causing public fear, we strongly suggest that students refrain from wearing a clown costume during Halloween celebrations and festivities,” according to a post on the Morris Plains School District website.
