Land of Make Believe awarded Elite 5-star designation for safety

HOPE TWP. (Warren County) – While many water parks tout that safety is at the forefront of importance to them, Land of Make Believe’s Pirate Cove Water Park in Hope Township can back it up with the announcement that they have again received a 5-Star designation from the Starfish Aquatics Institute.

Continuing over 60 years of a tradition of safe and wholesome fun, the designation to the park and its owner, Christopher Maier, has come from the highly-regarded institution after an extensive stealth inspection.

The rating signifies Land of Make Believe as one of the safest, most compliant water parks in the United States, as it has been so honored for the past many years.

Land of Make Believe was also recently named among the best amusement parks in New Jersey by New Jersey Family Magazine, second behind only Six Flags, as well as one of the best amusement parks “near New York City” by New York Family magazine.

The award-winning park has been recognized by numerous statewide and national groups over the years and is considered among the top amusement and water parks in the nation for its overall excellence in operations, safety, and consistent compliance with federal, state, county and local regulations and standards.

Celebrating many seasons at the foothills of Jenny Jump Mountain, the park, the largest employer of youths in Warren County, has been particularly recognized by the Starfish Aquatics Institute for the park’s lifeguards for their efforts in Prevention, Surveillance, Emergency Care, Aquatic Rescue, Professionalism and Personal Safety.

“This is truly a group effort on behalf of everyone who works here,” said Maier. “We pay close attention to every detail at the park and it has paid off consistently with this important designation.”

Recognized by a host of organizations for its importance to the tourism industry, Land of Make Believe has long been considered an economic engine in Northern New Jersey. Additionally, the park has saved 450 acres of open space at no cost to taxpayers. Land of Make Believe will be open daily through Labor Day Weekend and for its Grand Finale Weekend Sept. 9-10. What you need to know about the solar eclipse

All of North America on Monday can view an eclipse of the sun and much of the country will experience a total solar eclipse – referred to as “the path of totality.”

The eclipse in New Jersey begins around 1:22 p.m. Even though New Jersey is outside the path of totality, observers will still see a partial solar eclipse where the moon covers part of the sun’s disk.

To view a map of when the eclipse will happen in various parts of the country, visit eclipse2017.nasa.gov.

The only way to safely look directly at the partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters, eclipse glasses or hand-held solar viewers. Ordinary sunglasses are not safe for looking directly at the sun.

Solar eclipse can cause burns to the many layers of eye tissues including the cornea, lens and retina, said Lucy Chen, MD, pediatric ophthalmologist, a staff doctor at Goryeb Children’s Hospital/Morristown Medical Center, part of the Atlantic Health System. Damage to the retina, which is the delicate layer of nerve tissue that captures light and images and transmits images to the brain, is most visually consequential, she said.

Damage from viewing the solar eclipse is caused by infrared and UV radiation and excessive blue light. There is no risk to the eye when the eclipse is complete but any visible crescent of the sun behind the moon can cause solar damage to the eye that can result in permanent loss of vision, even blindness. The longer the eye views a partial eclipse, the greater the chance of retinal burns although burns can occur with short duration exposure.

“Children and younger people especially children are most at risk of retinal damage as their lenses tend to be the clearest and cannot disperse the harmful rays,” she said. “Eye wear protection is crucial while viewing the solar eclipse directly.”

Eclipse glasses can be purchased online and in stores throughout the country.  It is important however, to look for solar filters and glasses that carry the following certification insignia: ISO 12312-2. It is also important that Eclipse glasses and solar filters are purchased from reputable vendors.

How to Safely View the 2017 Solar Eclipse – Do’s and Don’ts from NASA:

  • Do not look directly at the sun
  • Do not use ordinary sunglasses
  • Use special-purpose solar filters, such as eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers, to view the eclipse
  • Read and follow the instructions that are printed on or packaged with the filter
  • Always supervise children to ensure they are using their eclipse glasses or solar filters correctly
  • In any stage of eclipse, do not look at the sun through a camera, telescope, binoculars or other optical device, and never use solar filters with these devices, as concentrated solar rays will damage them and can cause serious eye injury
  • Inspect your solar filter before use; if it is scratched or damaged, discard the filter
  • Outside the path of totality, you must always use a safe solar filter to view the sun directly (remember New Jersey is not in the path of totality)

Answer The Jay Edwards Poll Of The Week: Should Confederate Monuments Be Removed From Public Places?

Fire crews battle 3-alarm blaze in Dover, no injuries reported

DOVER, NJ (Morris County) – Officials are investigating a three-alarm fire that displaced 3 people early Sunday morning.

At 3:14 a.m., a smoke condition was reported by residents inside a single family home located at 40 Thompson Avenue, according to Dover Public Safety Director Daniel DeGroot.

Upon the arrival of first responding police and fire personnel, flames were observed, prompting second and third alarms to go out for assistance from neighboring mutual aid towns, DeGroot said.

The three occupants of the home safely evacuated from the residence; there were no injuries reported.  The fire was extinguished within 30 minutes, DeGroot said.

The home is uninhabitable due to the extensive damage. The American Red Cross responded and supplied aid to the victims with food and clothing, DeGroot said.

Assisting Dover were fire departments from Picatinny Arsenal, Rockaway Borough, Rockaway Township, Wharton, Mine Hill, and Randolph responded, while the Denville Fire Department stood by at the Dover firehouse to cover any other calls, DeGroot said.

The Morris County Office of Emergency Management Fire Coordinator also responded to provide necessary assistance, DeGroot said.

Although the official cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Dover Fire Department, it is not deemed suspicious, DeGroot said.

I-78 Delaware River bridge work starts this week, expect delays

PHILLIPSBURG, NJ (Warren County) – Construction activities are expected to begin this week on a multi-faceted project aimed at rehabilitating approach slabs and structural components at various overpasses and approach bridges along the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission’s roughly 6.5-mile-long I-78 segment in western New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania.

Motorists may encounter periodic backups and travel delays as various lane closures and traffic shifts are implemented on I-78 to carry out the project between now and fall 2018. There will be a brief hiatus in lane closures when construction activities are placed on hold during the winter.

The project entails bridge approach slab replacements at eight approach structures (relatively short-distance overpass/underpass type bridges), cleaning and painting at six approach and overpass structures, and an assortment of other tasks, including restriping the Commission’s entire I-78 roadway segment.

Construction activities will ramp up this week with milling and paving of rumble strips along the eastbound highway shoulders in the areas where initial project work will be taking place and where traffic shifts will be needed in the coming months.

To carry out this work, the contractor may restrict I-78 eastbound traffic to a two-lane pattern instead of the current three-lane configuration during peak travel hours (5 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays) and to a single-lane pattern during off-peak hours (8 p.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays). Moderate backups and travel delays could periodically arise when lane closures are in effect.

Motorists are urged to allow extra time to reach their destinations when traveling I-78 eastbound through the project area next week. Motorists also should reduce speeds and exercise caution whenever traveling through the various active work zones.

The westbound lane closures and weekend lane closures also will be utilized in coming weeks to carry out the project. The Commission will provide advance notice as addition travel restrictions are implemented over the course of the project.

Project-related travel restrictions primarily will involve protracted single-lane closures that will limit motorists to two travel lanes in a respective direction instead of the usual three travel lanes.

However, there will be several weekends over the course of the project where the project contractor will need to restrict traffic along a respective direction of I-78 to a single-lane pattern instead of the normal three-lane configuration. These single-lane patterns will involve intensified 34-hour work periods (8 p.m. Fridays to 6 a.m. Sundays) on select weekends.  Although weekend traffic volumes are lower, severe backups and travel delays remain likely during the single-lane travel periods.

Additional information about the project, can be found at their website drjtbc.org/project/I-78.
