LEBANON BOROUGH, NJ (Hunterdon County) – A Somerset County man has been identified as the person killed in Sunday’s fatal crash involving a State Police cruiser on Route 22.
At 7:57 a.m., Trooper Emmanuel Gonzalo, 26, who is assigned to Troop “B” Perryville Station, was driving a marked Ford Crown Victoria troop car westbound on Route 22, after being dispatched to a motor vehicle crash on Interstate 78 in Union Township, Hunterdon County, state police said.
Through a preliminary investigation, a GMC Envoy driven by Larry Helwig, 72, of Bridgewater, was involved in a collision with the troop car at the intersection of Route 22 and Cokesbury Road, state police said.
Helwig was pronounced deceased at the scene at 8:35 a.m. His passenger, Jane Roxbury, 67, of Lebanon, N.J., was airlifted to Morristown Medical Center where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, state police said.
Trooper Emmanuel Gonzalo was taken to Hunterdon Medical Center where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and later released, state police said.
“This is preliminary information only. The investigation remains active and on-going,” State Police said.
